Exploring the Impact of Green Walls on Occupant Thermal State in Immersive Virtual Environment

Green walls have been used in built environments as a natural element to bring various benefits, thus improving human health and well-being. However, conventional virtual environments, the visual connection with green wall is only way that this could benefit humans. Unfortunately, impact of such on thermal perception still not well understood. Thus, we conducted an experimental study 40 participants comparing state two sessions: biophilic (a room wall) non-biophilic (the same without wall). Both sessions were climate chamber under slightly warm condition (28.89 °C 50% relative humidity). Participants’ state, skin temperature, heart rate data collected. According results, participants’ comfort hand temperature significantly different between sessions, their mean was statistically increased over time. The suggests before extent which stimuli (e.g., walls) fully understood, researchers may need control separately when using them immersive environments. Furthermore, exposure time should be important consideration designing procedures.
